Bowel Cancer Screening Programme – Resect and Discard Optical Diagnosis Online Training Event

Background: Optical Diagnosis (OD) with  resect and discard (R&D) involves a colonoscopist making an optical diagnosis of small diminutive polyps (≤5mm) with high confidence. They are required to record with photographic documentation of the polyps, using both white and blue light imaging (e.g. narrow band imaging (NBI)) and then discard the resected polyps rather than sending them to histopathology.

Online Training Event: The Optical Diagnosis Online Training Event has three component parts which will all be covered on the training day: pre-training test, core learning, post-training test. Following completion of the OD training and successfully passing the post-training test, attendees will be required to perform 20 high confidence polyp diagnoses within supervised clinical practice, and provide photographic evidence to be reviewed and approved by the local screening centre OD champion. Once approved the OD champion will notify the NHSE BCSP OD quality assurance team who will review and issue a certificate of accreditation in optical diagnosis. Only once this certificate has been received can a clinician commence OD practice. 

Technical Requirements: Attendees are asked to clear their diaries for the duration of the training event and to work from a quiet location to complement the online nature of the learning. Attendees will require access to Microsoft teams. A Microsoft teams invitation for the online event will be sent closer to the training event date: February 7th 2025.
