Working together to improve care and outcomes for people with suspected Haemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

GIRFT has recently developed a new consensus pathway and supporting guidance for the rare and devastating condition, HLH.

HLH is a devastating syndrome with uncontrolled activation of the immune system leading to hyperinflammation, tissue damage and multi-organ failure. Our ambition is to increase awareness of HLH and emphasise the importance of working across specialties in diagnosis, to improve the care and outcomes for people with HLH.

In 2018, rheumatologists Dr Rachel Tattersall (Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Childrens’ Hospitals) and Dr Jessica Manson (University College London Hospitals) came together with the aim of trying to improve outcomes for patients with HLH, to standardise approaches to investigation and treatment, as well as characterising HLH to improve research.

GIRFT’s best practice guidance, issued in collaboration with The Hyperinflammation and HLH Across Specialty Collaboration (HiHASC - www.hihasc.org), aims to spread awareness of the condition through colleague education, and to address the operational practicalities of introducing this pathway.

Hosted by Dr Peter Lanyon and Dr Lesley Kay, GIRFT joint clinical leads for rheumatology,  this webinar will discuss GIRFT’s newly published guidance for the diagnosis, treatment, management and governance for HLH.

Drs Tattersall and Manson will talk about the pathway from both a paediatric and adult population perspective. We will also hear from:

  • Dr Sarah Levy, consultant rheumatologist, and Dr Stella Kotsiopoulou, consultant haematologist, on how the team at Croydon University Hospital engages everyone to recognise and treat HLH.
  • Dr Matt Szeto, consultant physician and rheumatologist, on the Kent and Medway approach to HLH.

The joining link will be sent by separate email nearer the event date.
