Medicines (Inhaler): Green Plan Guidance Webinar
In 2020, the NHS became the world’s first health system to commit to reaching net zero emissions. The Delivering a Net Zero National Health Service report set out the scale of ambition. The Health and Care Act 2022 reinforced this commitment, placing new duties on integrated care boards (ICBs), NHS trusts and foundation trusts (referred to collectively in this guidance as trusts) to consider statutory emissions and environmental targets in their decisions.
Trusts and ICBs are expected to meet these duties through the delivery of board-approved green plans. These plans now need to be refreshed in line with this statutory guidance by 31 July 2025.
London in partnership with the South East region, is hosting specific webinars to offer support. This one is on Medicines sustainability. We will be discussing:
- Inhaler prescribing in primary care - Amit Sharma, Clinical Lead, North East London ICB.
- Inhaler prescribing in secondary care - Gráinne d'Ancona, Consultant Pharmacist, Guys and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
- Inhaler recycling schemes (Re-hale) - Cath Cooksey, Medicines Safety Officer and Lead Medicines Optimisation Pharmacist, Medway FT and Medway & Swale Locality and Sam Coombes, Lead Medicines Information Pharmacy Technician, East Kent Hospital Foundation Trust.
The session will be interactive with time for discussion and Q&As. Please do prepare any medicines specific questions / comments in relation to the green plan guidance.
A calendar invite and joining link will be shared, at least 24 hours prior to this session.
The Medicines guidance for the Green Plan refresh also includes N2O and Mixed N2O waste. A wealth of resources is available to support efforts in reducing gas waste, including the recently published N2O toolkit and accompanying recorded sessions. These resources can be accessed on the London Greener NHS Futures page
