Many people with a learning disability live with life limiting conditions.  National and local LeDeR (Learning from the lives and deaths of people with learning disability and autistic people) programme findings continue to identify inequalities and inconsistencies in the care and support provided to people with a learning disability at the end of their lives.

To look at this further, a South West system wide review of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Advanced Care Planning Processes for people with a learning disability was completed in 2023. Findings identified opportunities to improve the experience and involvement that people with a learning disability and their families have during decision making processes in end of life care.

This online event, hosted by the South West NHS England Learning Disability and Autism Programme Team, aims to give attendees an opportunity to hear more about the audit results and some of the excellent work being taken forward in South West Integrated Care Systems to improve experiences of end of life care, and the understanding of death and dying amongst people with a learning disability.

It also aims to provide opportunity for attendees to reflect on current practice and help form a piece of improvement work that will be taken forward across the South West.

This event invites attendance from enthusiastic people willing to support positive change in practice including but not exclusive to:

  • Clinicians working across learning disability and autism and end of life & palliative care (this includes people from both NHS and independent providers)
  • Service Improvement Managers
  • Charities and Hospice Services
  • LeDeR Local Area Contacts and Reviewers
  • Social Care Providers
  • NHSE regional colleagues with an interest in this topic
  • Learning Disability and Autism/End of Life & Palliative Care Commissioners
